Guinea Pig Crisis

Every day after work I will unwinde by watching tv with a guinea pig taking a nap on my lap. On Friday I noticed that my Reese Cup was sluggish and had a hard time lifting his head and staying center. He would curl to the left and everytime I went near his neck between his ears and shoulderblades, he would cry and run away at top speed. I was starting to think that his sluggish movement on one side of his body is a human symptom of a stroke or maybe even a brain tumor and so I straight away put him in a cat carrier to bring him to the emergency hospital 30 miles away. It is funny how you come to panic when it is your pet. I sang soothing songs all the way there. :)

Turns out he had an inner ear infection and is on anti-biotics and a pain killer.

Does anybody know how these things develop? I am mostly concerned about how I could have prevented this 200 dollar trip incase it developes again when my hospital is closed for the day.

Thanks for any info.
